That’s why many early blankets featured a cross representing Spider Woman and her teachings. Though methods on placement vary, it’s widely considered taboo to place this cross within a diamond, square or triangle pattern so as not to “trap” her in the work; thus, you’ll find a deliberate imperfection. Can you find it? If you have Beth would love to hear from you! steve@navajorug.com

Style

Crystal

Weaver

Unknown Navajo

Date

circa 1920s

Size

62″ x 90″ (5'2" x 7'6")

Item #

PC 111

Learn more about Crystal Style weavings

Contact us for more information at nizhoniranch@gmail.com or 520-455-5020 -- We will be glad to help you!

Nizhoni Ranch Gallery donates a portion of each sale to the Forever Navajo Foundation. Forever Navajo's primary purpose is to preserve the fine art of Navajo weaving.

Appreciate the sophisticated artistry of this historic JB Moore-Crystal Navajo rug, a substantial 62" x 94" weaving that demonstrates masterful engagement with design catalog inspiration. The weaver created this piece using hand-carded and hand-spun native wool combined with aniline dyes, showcasing commitment to quality materials and vibrant color expression. What makes this textile particularly remarkable is the weaver's thoughtful integration of multiple JB Moore catalog plates into a cohesive composition. The arrow border (Plate III) frames the piece with directional energy, while two rows of diamonds (Plate VII) create rhythmic visual movement. The hook elements (Plate XXV) add geometric complexity and visual interest, while the whirling logs in the corners (Plate XXX) reference sacred Navajo symbolism and design tradition. The weaver's ability to synthesize these diverse catalog references into a unified, harmonious composition reveals deep artistic intelligence and technical skill. The composition features compelling hero twin imagery rendered in four-ply Germantown yarns, with vibrant aniline-dyed red accents that enliven the design. Hand-carded and hand-spun throughout, this antique piece demonstrates the technical sophistication and artistic ambition that made Teec Nos Pos weavings among the most celebrated and visually intricate of all Navajo textiles.
