Their durability is wonderful. They never fade, no matter how frequently washed—an operation in which amole, the saponaceous root of the Palmilla, should be substituted for soap. As for wear, I have seen the latter blankets which have been used for rugs on the floors of populous Mexican houses for fifty years, which still retain their brilliant color, and show serious wear only at their broken edges. You can easily reckon that the thread in it cost something, at $6 a pound, and the weaving occupied a Navaho woman for many months. It is hardly thicker than an ordinary book cover, and is almost as firm. It is too thin and stiff to be an ideal bed-blanket, and it was never meant to be one. All blankets of that quality were made to be worn on the shoulders of chiefs; and most of them were ponchos—that is, they had a small slit left in the center for the wearer to put his head through, so that the blanket would hang upon him like a cape. {"id":9617860611,"title":"Serape - Rio Grande Saltillo Style : Native American Textile: Antique : PC 35 : 53\" x 95\" (4'5\" x 7'11\")","handle":"serape-rio-grande-saltillo-style-serape-pc-35","description":"\u003cp\u003eSerape Navajo blanket.  This incredibly detailed Serape was woven in the early 1880s by a master who had been influenced by the Rio Grande - Saltillo style using 4-ply Germantown yarn.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe bold central pattern of concentric diamonds woven smaller and smaller by delicate saw-toothed outlined rows, come to focus on a delicate Spiderwoman Cross with bi-colored belted diamond tips.  And then like little bi-colored pinwheels the bi-colored belted diamonds are sprinkled throughout the weaving.  \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThere is a beautiful tri-colored border at the top and bottom of the piece, and then tiny, fine teeth make their appearance on each of the sides. This is an amazing work of art from our personal collection! Saltillo style using 4-ply Germantown yarn.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe bold central pattern of concentric diamonds woven smaller and smaller by delicate saw-toothed outlined rows, come to focus on a delicate Spiderwoman Cross with bi-colored belted diamond tips.  And then like little bi-colored pinwheels the bi-colored belted diamonds are sprinkled throughout the weaving.  \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThere is a beautiful tri-colored border at the top and bottom of the piece, and then tiny, fine teeth make their appearance on each of the sides. This is an amazing work of art from our personal collection!
