Sandpainting - Arrow People : Helene Nez : Churro 679
1ST PLACE & BEST OF CATEGORY "SANDPAINTING WEAVINGS" AND "BEST OF ALL WEAVINGS 2006 GALLUP ALL INDIAN INTER-TRIBAL CEREMONIAL
Navajo Arrow People Sandpainting Weaving from the Shooting Way Chant Woven by Master Weaver Helene Nez : This weaving was 2 years on the loom and is exceptionally well woven.
- 80 wefts per inch and made of all natural dyes.
Sandpainting drawings are done with colored sand and laid out on the floor of a Hogan by the Navajo Medicine Men when performing a healing ceremony, after which he would collect the sands together and distribute them in the 4 sacred directions.
Very few weavers would depict the Sandpaintings in a permanent weaving format, and only after a special ceremony giving them permission to do so. Helene is one of the few weavers living today that has the talent to weave this kind of detail into a Navajo weaving. This weaving is extremely fine and tightly woven. As Helene weaves she gives her yarns an extra twist before working them into the design. This is her signature technique that gives her weavings a patina and tightness that no one else can attain in a new weaving!
This beauty was featured in our Woven Holy People exhibit. You can enjoy the exhibit guide here. And is part of our exclusive Churro Collection of weavings.
