Saddle Blanket - Double : Historic : GHT 2189

Often its the borders which speak loudest in saddle blanket weavings, and here we have an excellent example.  This early turn of the century piece was woven using Churro Merino cross wool.  Imagine folding it in half and placing it under the saddle with just the border showing.  It would look stunning.

If you look at the detailed photos you will see numerous "lazy" or sectional lines - diagonal lines wafting throughout the piece.  These are functional breaks in that they would act as hinges and allow the blanket to conform better to the horse's back for a nicer and more comfortable fit.   Riders would also use a saddle blanket on top of the saddle to provide more comfort as they rode.  This piece would be one to catch your glance, either way.
