Sandpainting - Mother Earth Father Sky Navajo Weaving : Historic : GHT 1020

Sandpainting weavings are so special.  Each is woven with intent - intent to share the sandpainting, and intent that it not be perfect and that some elements have been changed to protect the sacred ceremony.

This is a beautiful sandpainting weaving featuring Mother Earth (on the left) and Father Sky (on the right).  The bottom figures depict the Great Figures. Horns of power appear on their heads,  The masks are outlined in red to indicate the life and power within.

At the top of the weaving are Yei Be Chei dancers who are assuming the role and function of the deities. In between them is a stylized corn plant. The bar rectangles that you see throughout the weaving are rainbow bars.

This piece was featured in our Woven Holy People Exhibit.  You can find the gallery exhibit guide here.
