Native American : Deer Gourd : Rachel Jaramillo : Gourd-carving

Rachel Jaramillo is a gifted Zia Pueblo artist. She has transformed a gourd into an incredible work of art.  Rachel used the method of relief carving, where the background is removed and art is revealed.

A deer and leaves were "released" from the relieved image. Rachel then used basketry skills to finish the opening of the gourd by weaving pine needles, and turned it into a carrying basket by incorporating a deer antler in the pine needle cording.  This is a remarkable piece of Native American Art.  It is a one-of-a-kind piece.
