dye process was quite complex and time consuming, requiring outdoor fires with large pots of vegetal materials to achieve these subtle colors. So several months of time are required for the entire process, considering the dyeing, loom construction and warping, and then the weaving process. They incorporate intricate serrate design elements of soft, earth tones of native plant dyes intermittently with solid bands of color. The design elements have become complex and the dye palette more extensive. For these reasons they are highly desirable to collectors.

Master Weaver Ellen Smith was one of 6 of the most talented vegetal dye artists of the Wide Ruins area. Wide Ruin area designs are the most refined of the vegetal dye colors.
