Für die Navajos ist das Weben eine ererbte Beschäftigung. Traditionell lernen kleine Mädchen es von ihren Großmüttern, die es von Generationen zuvor gelernt haben.
Die Familie Marianito webt seit Jahrzehnten für uns - genauer gesagt seit 1998. Die Marianito-Damen - alle Meisterweber, Kathy, Jalucie, Lucie, Jamie, Judy, Laverta Marianito und Julia und Elaine Upshaw - haben über 300 in Auftrag gegebene Kunstwerke nur für unsere exklusive Navajo Churro-Sammlung gewebt. Sie haben buchstäblich unzählige Preise beim Gallup Inter-Tribal Indian Ceremonial gewonnen und ihre Webereien in Museumsausstellungen, Shows und Katalogen gezeigt.
Während sie weithin für ihre Hauptdecken bekannt sind, weben sie, wie die folgenden Webereien widerspiegeln, viele verschiedene Designs, von denen viele einen modernen Kunst-Touch haben.
Im Gegensatz zu den meisten Webern schieben sie ihren eigenen Umschlag und haben das Weben mit Garn aus Alpaka-Fleece und Bombyx-Seide übernommen.
Kathy Marianto hat eine besonders interessante Familiengeschichte. Kathys Ur-Ur-Großmutter Juanita galt in den 1870er und 1880er Jahren als eine der besten Deckenweberinnen. Juanitas Ehemann Manuelito war einer der prominentesten Führer der Navajo. Es war Manuelito, Kathys Ur-Ur-Großvater, der maßgeblich an der Aushandlung der Freilassung der Navajos aus Fort Sumner und Bosque Redondo im Jahr 1868 beteiligt war und in ihre Heimat zurückkehrte, den einzigen vertriebenen Stamm, der auf seinem wahren Heimatboden zurückkehren durfte.l.
