About this weaving
Yei by Master weaver Elsie Bia. The one large Yei surrounding the inner 6 figures is the Rainbow Yei. The inner Yei figures are female (because of their square heads) and are holding feathers, the rainbow Yei is holding rain chains. Rainbows are a symbol of all good things and happiness to the Navajo.
The original Ceremonial Yei Sandpainting Drawings were done with colored sand by the Navajo Medicine Men when performing a ceremony, after the ceremony he would collect the sands together and distribute them in the 4 sacred directions. Very few weavers depict the Yei Sand paintings in a permanent weaving format, and only after a special ceremony is performed, giving them permission to do so.
