Yei imagery against a night sky, depicting stars, constellations and moon. 1.5 years on the loom! \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cdiv class=\"text_exposed_show\"\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe Navajo way of life is based on an oral tradition in which stories, lessons and values are passed down from generation to generation. The Creation story of the Navajo Emergence as “The People or Dine” is as sacred as the Bible to the Navajo. One theme reoccurs often and in almost all writings, that is central to the Navajo, attainment and maintenance of harmony and beauty, called Hozho. To create Hozho ceremonies are preformed.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe Yei Be Chei dancers are the human impersonators of holy people which perform the ceremonies. The Yei Be Chei weavings present the dancers as they dance, perform, and enact the ceremony of the Yeis. The Yeis perform specific dances and rituals, as directed by the Medicine Man, during the ceremony for the desired end.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eYei be Chei weavings are highly individual, therefore, different elements may be found in them. Male Yeis have round heads and Female Yeis have square heads. Other elements included may be: gourds, ruffs of spruce around the neck, fox pelts, moccasins, woven garters or sashes, arrows, corn, clouds, stars, and more.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBerlinda is from the famous and talented Nez Family. Her mother Grace, 7 sisters and niece are all award winning and highly respected Master Weavers. Berlinda started this weaving July 1998 and finished Jan 2000 : 1 1\/2 years on the loom. It is time for this piece to grace the wall of a new owner. To create Hozho ceremonies are preformed.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe Yei Be Chei dancers are the human impersonators of holy people which perform the ceremonies. The Yei Be Chei weavings present the dancers as they dance, perform, and enact the ceremony of the Yeis. The Yeis perform specific dances and rituals, as directed by the Medicine Man, during the ceremony for the desired end.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eYei be Chei weavings are highly individual, therefore, different elements may be found in them. Male Yeis have round heads and Female Yeis have square heads. Extremely tight and finely woven. Would be fine for the floor or wall. Very subtle color combinations, with fine details.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis piece is highly unusual in that it has the words \"24 cans\" woven into it. The words are woven in forward and reverse text so that it would be legible from either side. This would likely have been a custom commissioned piece. It would be interesting to know the meaning behind \"24 cans\" wouldn't it? There were 24 cans of beers to a case. The beverage bottling industry was expanding. Perhaps the words referred to a favorite soda or beer?\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eUsing a background of lovely variegated natural brown and cream Lincoln wools (look at that gorgeous dark brown coloring), Slocum hand-carded, hand-spun, and hand-dyed the wool to get the lovely colors of green, red, and yellow. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOf the designs and symbols you will find tiny thunderbirds, Spiderwoman crosses, stylized squash blossoms, and belted diamonds. The central diamond row is bordered by Greek Key symbols, and the inside of the diamonds feature clouds pointing in the four directions. The design and symmetry of the border is so complicated and yet executed so brilliantly it features stylized Hero Twin images. Combined with its incredibly tight weave, this is a masterpiece!\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003e This weaving was part of the 2016 \/2017 \u003cem\u003e\u003cstrong\u003ePainting with Wool : Navajo Pictorial Weavings\u003c\/strong\u003e \u003c\/em\u003eexhibit at Nizhoni Ranch Gallery and is on page 25 of the catalog for the show.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cstrong\u003e\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThis handsome Teec Nos Pos weaving is attributed to Slocum Klah, master weaver. The words are woven in forward and reverse text so that it would be legible from either side. This would likely have been a custom commissioned piece. It would be interesting to know the meaning behind \"24 cans\" wouldn't it? There were 24 cans of beers to a case. The beverage bottling industry was expanding. Perhaps the words referred to a favorite soda or beer?\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eUsing a background of lovely variegated natural brown and cream Lincoln wools (look at that gorgeous dark brown coloring), Slocum hand-carded, hand-spun, and hand-dyed the wool to get the lovely colors of green, red, and yellow. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOf the designs and symbols you will find tiny thunderbirds, Spiderwoman crosses, stylized squash blossoms, and belted diamonds. The central diamond row is bordered by Greek Key symbols, and the inside of the diamonds feature clouds pointing in the four directions. The design and symmetry of the border is so complicated and yet executed so brilliantly it features stylized Hero Twin images.
