Indian fetishes represent the spirits of animals or different forces of nature and are hand carved. The North American Indians used fetishes in an effort to master forces beyond their control.
The turtle is the oldest symbol of Mother Earth and represents love, protection, knowledge and longevity, Is also used for healing. Some believe that the possession of a turtle fetish allows one to defy death. It also represents water, which in the high dessert climate of Zuni is a precious commodity.
