The 5th exhibition at the Nizhoni Ranch Gallery focusing on the living artists whose works are represented in the Navajo Churro Collection. The weaving families featured rank among the most talented Navajo weaving families past or present. They have mastered the traditional techniques of the Navajo loom, taking the Navajo textile to new heights of design and symmetry.
Our love of Navajo weaving started as a passion for collecting, that morphed into a business and then into a gallery. In the 1990's we started the Navajo Churro Collection - providing the weavers with Navajo Churro Wool that was custom spun and hand dyed with the finest natural and aniline dyes available. The real artistry comes from the weavers magically putting the wefts into a spatial design - that is at times beyond belief.
A catalog was printed to preserve the exhibit, as some pieces find new homes.

Helene is one of the few weavers living today that has the talent to weave this kind of detail into a Navajo weaving. This weaving is extremely fine and tightly woven. As Helene weaves she gives her yarns an extra twist before working them into the design. The Creation story of the Navajo Emergence as “The People or Dine” is as sacred as the Bible to the Navajo. One theme reoccurs often and in almost all writings, that is central to the Navajo, attainment and maintenance of harmony and beauty, called Hozho. To create Hozho ceremonies are preformed.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe Yei Be Chei dancers are the human impersonators of holy people which perform the ceremonies. The Yei Be Chei weavings present the dancers as they dance, perform, and enact the ceremony of the Yeis. The Yeis perform specific dances and rituals, as directed by the Medicine Man, during the ceremony for the desired end.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eYei be Chei weavings are highly individual, therefore, different elements may be found in them. Male Yeis have round heads and Female Yeis have square heads. Other elements included may be: gourds, ruffs of spruce around the neck, fox pelts, moccasins, woven garters or sashes, arrows, corn, clouds, stars, and more.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBerlinda is from the famous and talented Nez Family. The Creation story of the Navajo Emergence as “The People or Dine” is as sacred as the Bible to the Navajo. One theme reoccurs often and in almost all writings, that is central to the Navajo, attainment and maintenance of harmony and beauty, called Hozho. To create Hozho ceremonies are preformed.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe Yei Be Chei dancers are the human impersonators of holy people which perform the ceremonies. The Yei Be Chei weavings present the dancers as they dance, perform, and enact the ceremony of the Yeis. The Yeis perform specific dances and rituals, as directed by the Medicine Man, during the ceremony for the desired end.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eYei be Chei weavings are highly individual, therefore, different elements may be found in them. Male Yeis have round heads and Female Yeis have square heads. Other elements included may be: gourds, ruffs of spruce around the neck, fox pelts, moccasins, woven garters or sashes, arrows, corn, clouds, stars, and more.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBerlinda is from the famous and talented Nez Family.
